Be A Fit Kid Physical Activity
The traditional Be A Fit Kid physical activity component is offered three times each week for 30 minutes and emphasizes cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscular strength, and bone development through running, jumping, and strength training exercises. The physical activity component of Be A Fit Kid distinguishes itself from traditional physical education programs in the following ways:
· Fitness activities are emphasized rather than sports skills and competitive games.
· Physical activities are individualized and noncompetitive.
· Children are motivated by receiving fitness-related tokens as they accumulate laps on the running field and meet individual fitness goals (purchased from Fitness Finders).
Because the traditional Be A Fit Kid physical activity program is running-based, requires experience and a time commitment for individualizing and recording workouts, and is most successful with the help of college students, the implementation of the traditional physical activity component of Be A Fit Kid by PE and/or classroom teachers may not be feasible. For this reason, we will work with PE and/or classroom teachers to incorporate some running/fitness-based activities into their regular PE classes or classroom time if requested. Our aim is to be flexible and accommodate the needs of each teacher and school by modifying the Be A Fit Kid curriculum to fit into the pre-existing PE program.
